Landscape design

Shrubs in landscape design.

It’s time to diversify your landscape with different bushes.

Shrubs are a staple of almost any landscape design, but understanding how they fit into the overall garden scheme and knowing the types of shrubs in addition to a handful of traditional solutions is a key skill these days. In this article, we will consider in detail the variety of shrubs that will be optimal for planting in your yard.

It is important to remember that every landscape design can be broken down into five main layers, which will help you plan your work and make the right decisions about what and where to plant. The layer of shrubs is number three in the layer system, and occupies the largest space. It covers a wide height range that allows you to expand your list of greenery beyond the common rhododendrons, azaleas, and boxwoods that we often see in the typical residential landscape.

Start with the shrub feature.
When choosing shrubs, first consider the plant’s function in your landscape before choosing for aesthetics. For example, if you need something to provide a year-round hedge, you’ll need a certain type of shrub, unlike if your goal is to add a new pop of color to your flower bed.

Once you’ve determined functionality, you’re ready to narrow down your choices even further based on your knowledge of what will grow best in your area. Every time you decide to buy a shrub that suits you, try to study it outside the nursery (perhaps such a shrub is already growing in your neighbors, relatives or friends).

Time to try something new.
Every designer has a favorite plant palette. While this is perfectly acceptable, try experimenting a bit. Unfortunately, many landscape projects use a standard set of shrubs for planting, although there are so many interesting options.

1. Pieris japonica (Pieris japonica) is a species of beautifully flowering shrubs from the genus Pieris of the heather family, keep it partly in the sun, partly in the shade.

2. Cephalotaxus harringtonia is a close relative of yews, the needles have a velvety green texture.

3. Leucothoe (Leucothoe axillaris) is a genus of deciduous or evergreen shrubs of the heather family

4. Microbiota decussata (Microbiota decussata) is a graceful evergreen material with soft protruding branches that will spread in shades of dark green.

5. Glauca Globosa Spruce (Picea pungens ‘Glauca Globosa’) – if you want a blue-grey color in your garden, this is what you need. Give him sun and space.
